Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo launches in August as two carriers open Vietnam–Sri Lanka's first direct link at nearly the same time

A direct route linking Ho Chi Minh City with Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, launches in August 2026. Vietnam Airlines starts on August 16 and the budget carrier Vietjet on August 18 -- just two days apart on the same route. It is the first service to connect Vietnam and Sri Lanka without a transfer; until now, travelers between the two countries had to change planes in Singapore, Bangkok, or an Indian city. For Japanese residents of Ho Chi Minh City, it suddenly brings Sri Lanka -- and the Maldives and southern India beyond it -- much closer, genuinely changing the options for business trips and vacations.

Vietnam Airlines launches on August 16 and Vietjet on the 18th, both running three flights a week

Vietnam Airlines runs the Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat International Airport)–Colombo route3 flights a week: Wednesday, Friday, Sundayoperates on the schedule shown. The aircraft used is an AirbusA321The airline had originally planned to launch in October but moved the date well forward to August 16, a move to capture demand as it picks up. A full-service SkyTeam member is first to open the route.

Two days later, on August 18, Vietjet enters the same route. The aircraft is an A320. As a launch promotion, it is offering a one-way economy-class fare ofAbout US$90 (roughly 14,000 yen at about 155 yen to the dollar)The airline started sales at that fare and ran a campaign cutting the base fare 20% on the higher Deluxe and SkyBoss classes. On frequency, a flight-schedule site reports 3 flights a week, while Vietjet's own announcement puts it at 4 — the figures differ by source. We'll avoid a firm claim and take it that the route starts at 3 to 4 flights a week just after launch. It's unusual for a new international route to have a full-service and a low-cost carrier running side by side in the same week at nearly the same frequency.

38,000 travelers, up 17.5% year on year, drove the case for a direct flight

There are real numbers behind the two carriers flying at the same time. Passengers traveling between Vietnam and Sri Lanka in 2025topped 38,000, up 17.5% from the previous year. Adding a direct flight to a segment already this busy even as a connection should, the thinking goes, further unlock demand through shorter travel times and fare competition. Vietjet's launch was announced at a bilateral forum on trade, investment and tourism cooperation held in Colombo, attended by Vietnam's General Secretary To Lam and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Amarasuriya. That the route moves in step with government-level efforts to boost travel is worth noting when gauging how stable the frequency will be.

Vietnam Airlines' international expansion continues on Japan routes as well,The airline's Japan moves: 11 weekly flights to Da Nang and a doubling of Hanoi-Osaka in Decemberset alongside this, you can see a stance of spreading outward from a Southeast Asian base to neighboring countries. The Colombo route is one move on that South Asian side.

A new route opens, connecting through Colombo to the Maldives and South India

The value of this direct flight lies beyond Colombo itself. Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is SriLankan Airlines' hub, and the carrier links 105 cities in 47 countries. Its India network is especially dense — spanning a double-digit list of cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi and Hyderabad — reaching about 93 flights a week to India alone. India traffic is a core roughly 30% of SriLankan's passengers. It also flies to Male in the Maldives.

In other words, fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Colombo and you can use it as a hub to reach the Maldives or southern India with a single connection. Routes that once ran through Bangkok, Singapore or a major Indian city now gain a new gateway starting from Vietnam. The way a new direct flight pulls in remote islands and inland areas for the first time is, for example,The first direct flight linking Chengdu and Phu Quocresembles how X changed the flow of inland Chinese travelers. A single line connecting two points rewrites the traffic across a whole area.

For residents and business travelers from Japan, Sri Lanka comes within one connection via SGN

For Japanese residents in Ho Chi Minh City and business travelers heading to Vietnam, the practical upside is large. Reaching Sri Lanka has usually meant connecting in Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, with hard-to-predict times and fares. A direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City lets you step straight from your home or work base toward South Asia and the Indian Ocean. For travelers from Japan, routing into Ho Chi Minh City from Narita or Kansai and connecting at Tan Son Nhat also becomes realistic.

Better airport access helps too. Getting from central Ho Chi Minh City to Tan Son Nhat has long been a headache, butA plan for Metro Line 6 to connect all three airport terminals via underground stationsis underway, and its usability as a transit hub will rise going forward. Connection times between international flights, and whether you need to clear immigration at SGN (stopping in transit, or staying a night in the city), are points to confirm when planning your itinerary.

Treat Vietjet's economy fares from US$90 one-way as a launch promotion

The launch fares call for caution. Vietjet's roughly US$90 one-way is a base-fare launch promotion; add checked baggage, seat selection, airport tax and fuel surcharges, and the actual payment swells. Not taking an LCC's headline price as the total is the same discipline you'd use on Vietnam's domestic routes. Vietnam Airlines, as full-service, prices on the assumption that checked baggage and onboard service are included, so for baggage-heavy business trips or trips home carrying gifts, comparing total cost rather than the plain one-way fare fits reality better.

Reactions are mixed. In Ho Chi Minh City's Japanese community, some welcome it—"Having the Maldives within weekend reach is a big deal"—while travel-industry insiders take a cautious line: "Frequencies and fares shift right after launch, so we'd rather watch for about six months until it settles before packaging it." Early demand on a new route is hard to read, and flights can be added or cut. For travelers, the smart move is to weigh the connection buffers, the total fare and the stability of the schedule before jumping at a cheap launch fare.
