What's the difference between one star and Bib Gourmand? Tips for ordering and paying

One-star Ănăn offers only a tasting menu starting at $115 USD, while Bib Gourmand Bò Kho Gánh starts at 70,000 dong a bowl, and Selected Hoa Túc starts at 165,000 dong for a weekday lunch — even among restaurants in the same guide, budgets vary widely.

The difference between one star, Selected, and Bib Gourmand

Restaurants in the Michelin Guide fall into three categories: stars, Bib Gourmand, and Selected. Stars rate the quality of the cooking, Bib Gourmand recognizes restaurants offering high-quality food at reasonable prices, and Selected covers restaurants chosen for the guide without a star or Bib Gourmand rating.

ClassificationRestaurants in this article
One star① Ănăn Saigon
Selected③ Rice Field、④ Vietnam House、⑥ Hoa Túc、⑦ ST25 by KOTO、⑨ Hoi An Sense、⑬ Madame Lam
Bib Gourmand⑤ Bếp Mẹ Ỉn、⑧ Cục Gạch Quán、⑩ Nhà Tú、⑫ Bò Kho Gánh

The classification reflects the 2026 edition. Classifications can change from year to year.

Tasting-menu restaurants versus à la carte restaurants

①'s Ănăn offers only a dinner tasting menu, and everyone at the same table has the same menu (official website). ④'s Vietnam House has lunch and dinner sets (official website). And at restaurants like ⑧'s Cục Gạch Quán and ⑩'s Nhà Tú, you choose dishes from the menu to share.

Vietnamese dish names

These are dish names that appear often on menus, including in the dishes covered at the restaurants in this article.

If you don't like cilantro, saying "không ngò" (without cilantro) will get the message across.

What to watch for when ordering and paying

Keep an eye on the following when checking the menu and the bill.

  • If prices are marked “++,” tax and service charge are added separately
  • Whether the bill includes dishes or drinks you didn't order
  • Whether cards are accepted. We couldn't confirm payment methods for some restaurants, so bring cash as well

For how to think about tipping, seeour article on tipping in Vietnam: typical amounts and how to hand it over, and for cash on hand, seeour article on how to exchange money in Vietnam.

How booking through AutoReserve works

AutoReserve is a service that lets you search for and book restaurants around the world in Japanese. Each restaurant's page shows whether it can be booked instantly or whether it's a "booking on request" restaurant, where AutoReserve contacts the restaurant on your behalf to secure a table.

The difference between an instant booking and a booking on request

MethodHow it worksWhen it's confirmed
Instant bookingFor restaurants connected to AutoReserve, you book instantly by checking available seatsConfirmed the moment you book
Booking on requestFor restaurants that mainly take phone reservations, AutoReserve contacts them on your behalf to check availabilityYou're notified of confirmation by email or in-app notification once the restaurant replies

With a booking on request, it takes time to hear back from the restaurant, and the reservation isn't confirmed until you do.

4 steps from booking to your visit

  1. Open the restaurant on AutoReserve and request a booking with your date, time, and party size
  2. For a booking on request, AutoReserve contacts the restaurant to check availability (not yet confirmed at this point)
  3. You'll receive a "booking confirmed" notice by email or app notification
  4. Show up at the restaurant on your reserved date and time

A reservation isn't always guaranteed

  • A booking may not go through if the restaurant is fully booked, among other reasons
  • Due to relocations or multiple branches, the address listed on AutoReserve may differ from the actual one. Please check the address in your booking confirmation
  • Business hours and closing days may change, so please check the restaurant's page for the latest information

What should I do when several restaurants share the same name?

A Taste Of Saigon, Vietnam House, Bếp Mẹ Ỉn, Madame Lam, and Hoa Túc all have other branches carrying the same name elsewhere in the city. Hủ Tiếu Hồng Phát's main branch (389 Võ Văn Tần) is the one holding the Bib Gourmand, and No.14 in this article is its Thao Dien branch. We've noted the address of the branch bookable through AutoReserve for each restaurant, so check the location with "Open in Google Maps" before heading out.

Do I need a reservation?

For restaurants booked as a proxy reservation through AutoReserve, the booking is only confirmed after the restaurant replies, so wait for that confirmation before heading out. Ănăn Saigon has two fixed seating times, 5:30pm and 8:30pm (official website).
