Ninh Binh, south of Hanoi, is the "Ha Long Bay on land," where strange limestone peaks rise from rice paddies and rivers. The stars are the river cruises of Tam Coc and Trang An, ducking through caves in hand-rowed boats, and it can be visited even as a day trip from Hanoi. The ancient capital Hoa Lu and the giant Bai Dinh Temple are also nearby. This page pulls together everything from the area's overall picture, how to get around, standard spots, model courses, food, souvenirs, and the latest topics, and guides you to individual articles on cafés, news, and souvenirs.

What kind of place is Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh province, in northern Vietnam, about 100 km from Hanoi, is a treasure trove of nature and history. It's home to Hoa Lu, capital of the Dai Co Viet kingdom (the first independent dynasty) founded in the 10th century, and the center of the World Mixed Heritage "Trang An Landscape Complex." The scenery of limestone karst spreading across farmland is called the "Ha Long Bay on land," and it also drew attention as a filming location for the movie "Kong: Skull Island." Ninh Binh province is close enough to Hanoi at two hours by car, and since day-trip sightseeing is possible, English-language tours departing Hanoi are plentiful. Trang An is an area certified as a World Mixed Heritage (natural and cultural) site, and a 3-hour boat tour tours strange limestone rocks, caves, and old temples. Tam Coc means "three caves," and the contrast of farmland and limestone is a superb view. It gained attention as a filming location for "Kong: Skull Island," and Kong Village, where the dedicated film set remains, is also a tourist attraction. Bai Dinh Temple is one of Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist temples, and the approach lined with 500 arhat statues is overwhelming.

Getting to Ninh Binh and getting around

Ninh Binh isabout 100km from Hanoi. At around an hour and a half by expressway, or a bit over two hours by train, it's one of thefew World Heritage areas where a day trip actually works. That said, as I'll explain below, a day trip realistically lets you cover only two spots.

How to get there from Hanoi

MeansDurationFare guideNotes
Private limousine van2-2.5 hours140,000-310,000 dongMost practical. Door-to-door from a hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter to your lodging in Tam Coc. About 380 runs a day across 18 companies
Train2 hours 8 minutes - 2 hours 43 minutes103,000-192,000 dong6-9 trains a day. Southbound trains such as SE1, SE3, SE5, SE7
Public bus2 to 3 hours60,000-100,000 dongCheap, but frequency and timing are hard to predict
Day tourAbout 12 hoursApprox. 990,000 dongIncludes bus, lunch, boat fare, and guide

If you're taking the train, the realistic choice for a day trip isSE7 (departs Hanoi 6:00, arrives Ninh Binh 8:22). Anything later and you won't have enough time on the ground.

Limousine vans pick you up right at your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter, so this is the easiest option if you're carrying luggage. Major operators include Nam Định, Bình Minh, Hoa Lư, and Tràng An. You can book through platforms like Vexere.

🔴 A day trip means "two spots, max"

Travel alone eats up three hours round trip, and the Trang An boat ride alone takes 2.5-3.5 hours. In other words,"Trang An + Mua Cave" or "Trang An + Bai Dinh Pagoda" is the realistic limit for what a day trip can cover.

Doing both Tam Coc and Trang An in one day isn't realistic. Both boat rides take 2-3 hours. If you want to take in the scenery properly, staying overnight is strongly recommended.

Getting around locally — you can't do it on foot

Let's be blunt:you can't cover Ninh Binh's sights on foot. You can walk within Tam Coc village itself (lodging, eateries, the boat dock) and to Bich Dong Pagoda, but Trang An, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu, and Bai Dinh all require transport beyond a bicycle.

Road surface temperatures get extremely high from May to August, so cycling isn't recommended during this period. Use a car or motorbike taxi instead.

Ninh Binh's standard sightseeing spots

We've summed up the representative spots in a quick-reference table. Use it as a guide when planning your route.

Trang An

A World Mixed Heritage site registered in 2014 under both cultural and natural criteria, its specialty is hand-rowed small boats ducking through numerous water caves weaving between limestone crags. Each boat's rower handles the oars, and the composition where you emerge from a dim cave to find a quiet water surface and a temple is a highlight. It's also known as a filming location for the movie "Kong: Skull Island," and depending on the course, it takes from around two hours to nearly half a day. About an hour and a half by car from Hanoi, the earlier morning hours have emptier boats and calmer water. Confirming the route number you'll tour before departure keeps you from misjudging the time required.

Tam Coc

Meaning "three caves," the core is a cruise ducking through three natural caves while going down the Ngo Dong River in a hand-rowed boat. The contrast of the rice paddies spreading on both banks and the sheer limestone is beautiful, and the early-summer harvest season, when the rice is dyed golden, is especially worth seeing. The distinctive rowing method, where rowers handle the oars with their feet, is one of the highlights too. The round-trip cruise is about an hour and a half to two hours as a guide, and if you want to avoid the strong sunlight, the later afternoon hours are calm.

Hoa Lu ancient capital

The birthplace of Vietnam's unifying dynasties, where the 10th-century Dinh and Early Le dynasties placed their capital. The palaces of the time don't remain, but two shrine halls enshrining Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and Emperor Le Dai Hanh survive, and stone carvings and old gates convey traces of the past. Near Trang An and Tam Coc, its location allowing a short drop-in combined with boat sightseeing is convenient. Visiting after grasping the historical background lets you feel the meaning of the simple shrine halls more deeply.

Bai Dinh Temple

A giant Buddhist temple complex boasting one of Southeast Asia's largest scales, with new and old halls lined up on vast grounds. The approach where hundreds of arhat statues continue in a row along a long corridor is the symbolic highlight. Since the grounds are extremely large, moving from the entrance to the main halls by electric cart is common, and on foot alone it takes considerable time and stamina. Early morning and evening have relatively few worshippers, letting you walk the corridors slowly.

Mua Cave and viewpoint

Climbing to the top of the stone steps continuing to the summit of Ngoa Long Mountain, a grand panorama looking down on Tam Coc's rice paddies and limestone peaks spreads out. The stone steps to the top are said to number about 500, and allowing roughly 30 minutes at an unstrained pace from the climb-start to the viewpoint is reassuring. On the ridge are a dragon carving and a pagoda, and the composition commanding a view of the meandering river and farmland below is a popular photo spot. Since there's little shade and it's muggy during the day, prepare non-slip shoes and water and climb in the cool morning or evening hours as recommended.

Ninh Binh model course

The first thing to decide in Ninh Binh iswhich boat ride to take — Trang An or Tam Coc. Both take 2-3 hours, so you can't fit both into one day.

Worth knowing first: 2026 admission price hikes

On January 1, 2026, admission fees at the major sights were revised across the board. Many articles online still show the old prices, so be careful.

※ Tam Coc used to sell admission (120,000) and the boat fare (150,000) separately, butit's now a single combined price. Going by old information can leave you confused on the ground, so keep this in mind.

Trang An has three routes, all priced the same.Route 2(2.5-3 hours, four caves, the King Kong film set) is the most popular.Route 1(3-3.5 hours, nine caves) is the only route that passes through Đền Trần, the core of the World Heritage site.

8:00Arrive at Trang An → boat (Route 2, 2.5-3 hours)
11:30Lunch (goat meat and com chay)
13:30Mua Cave (486 steps, about 1.5 hours) or Bai Dinh Pagoda
16:30Departing Ninh Binh
18:30Arrive in Hanoi

Overnight, two-day itinerary (recommended)

Day 1 MorningDepart Hanoi → arrive Tam Coc (door-to-door by limousine van)
Day 1 AfternoonTam Coc boat ride (2-3 hours) → a 20-minute walk to Bich Dong Pagoda
Day 1, eveningDinner and overnight stay in Tam Coc village
Day 2, early morningMua Cave(6:00-8:30 is cool and uncrowded)
Day 2 MorningTrang An boat ride (Route 2)
Day 2 AfternoonHoa Lu ancient capital → Bai Dinh Pagoda → back to Hanoi

For day 2,renting a bicycle or motorbike for the dayis the most efficient option. With Trang An to Mua Cave at 10km and Trang An to Bai Dinh at 5km, being able to move under your own power dramatically increases your flexibility.

If you're going during rice season (late May to early June), make Tam Coc the highlight of day 1. Outside that season, it's fine to put Trang An first instead.

Ninh Binh food and specialties

We've put the local flavors you'll want to savor in Ninh Binh into a table.

DishCharacteristics
Com chay (palm rice / fried rice crust)A local dish made by frying rice crust, its charm is a toasty, crisp texture. Eating it with a thickened meat-and-vegetable sauce poured over is the standard, and it's an item often served together with goat-meat dishes.
Goat-meat dishes (thit de)Ninh Binh's signature dish using goats raised in the limestone mountains, characterized by little gaminess and firm meat quality. The cooking methods are wide-ranging — steam-grilled, seared, or made into an herb-tossed salad — and the style of wrapping it in rice paper to eat is also often seen.
Thit chungA homey stewed dish of slowly simmered pork and the like, characterized by a rich seasoning that goes well with rice. Rustic yet a taste beloved locally, it can be enjoyed alongside com chay and goat-meat dishes.
Ngo Dong River fish dishesDishes using river fish caught in the Ngo Dong River flowing around Tam Coc, served fried or simmered. The plain flesh is finished with herbs and local seasonings, letting you savor a table befitting the inland water country.
Paddy eel dishesA local dish using paddy eels that live in the rice fields, served deep-fried, in glass-noodle soup, or combined with rice crust. You can enjoy a firm texture and toasty flavor, a dish unique to a rice-growing region.

Souvenirs to buy in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh's specialties aregoat meat and com chay. Both are foods shaped by a land built on limestone mountains.

Goat meat (thịt dê núi)

Ninh Binh's goats areraised free-range on the limestone mountains, which is said to give the meat a firm texture, a stronger red color, and less of the gamey smell. There are three classic ways to eat it:

dê tái chanhRare goat meat tossed with lime, chili, and herbs. The most classic preparation
dê nướngGrilled over charcoal
lẩu dêGoat meat hotpot

At restaurants, expect a range of 100,000-350,000 dong per person as the going rate. Well-known shops include Thành Long (04 Ngô Quyền) and Đức Dê (446 Nguyễn Huệ).

Cơm cháy — crispy rice

Made from deep-fried crispy sticky rice, this isNinh Binh's most famous food souvenir. Locally, it's eatentopped with a goat meat sauce. Souvenir packs typically come with pork floss, sesame, or chili salt sprinkled on top.

The best place to find everything together isCho Rong Market (Chợ Rồng, 71 Vân Giang)There you'll find goat meat products, Kim Son liquor, com chay, pineapples, and handicrafts all in one place. You can also buy them at the souvenir shop strip in Tam Coc, drive-in-style shops along National Route 1A, and supermarkets like GO! (formerly Big C).

Also,Com chay is also sold at supermarkets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City,so it's not a disaster if you miss buying it locally.

Ninh Binh's hotels and where to stay

For lodging in Ninh Binh, basing yourself around Tam Coc is the standard choice. Ninh Binh city itself is convenient for transport, but has neither sightseeing nor atmosphere to offer.

※ In July 2025, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Ninh Binh provinces were merged into a new, single "Ninh Binh Province." The district (huyện) unit has also been abolished. Old address labels (such as "Ninh Binh City" or "Hoa Lu District") are no longer in use, so confirm by facility name when booking.

Best season, budget, and trip preparation

Ninh Binh isThis is a place where the scenery you seechanges completely depending on when you go. Tam Coc's "golden rice" in particular isvisible for only about two weeks a year. This is worth pinning down carefully.

🔴 Tam Coc's golden rice is "once a year, and only once"

A common misconception is that "Vietnam grows two rice crops a year, so golden rice can be seen in autumn too," butTam Coc's tourist paddies grow only a single crop a year. Five or more major Vietnamese media outlets report this consistently.

TransplantingLate January
Color starts to turnMid-May
Golden peakLate May to early June (about two weeks)
Harvest completeEarly June

During this window,Ninh Binh's tourism festival, "Sắc vàng Tam Cốc" (Golden Color of Tam Coc)is held, with giant rice-straw art laid out in the paddies (in 2026, held May 23-31, drawing 635,000 visitors). Dates shift year to year, so check the province's official announcement if you're planning around it.

Also,Golden paddies can also be seen in September and October, but those are the province's regular double-cropped fields, not the Tam Coc tourist area. Mixing the two up means a wasted trip.

Monthly climate

PeriodTemperatureRainfallRating
December-January15〜22℃25〜30mm○ Least rain of the year. Mornings have a dreamlike mist
February-March15〜22℃30〜50mm△ Drizzle and overcast skies blur the scenery
April21〜27℃80mm◎ Comfortable
Late May to early June24〜31℃165〜230mm◎ Golden rice + lotus flowers(though hot)
June-July26〜33℃225〜230mm× Hottest, 90% humidity
August-September25〜26℃315〜370mm× Heaviest rain and peak typhoon season
Late October-November19〜28℃70〜245mm◎ Mild and clear

Lotus flowersbloom at the foot of Mua Cave from May to July (best from June-July). Early morning, 5:00-5:30, is the best time for photos.

Conclusion: when to go

  • If scenery is the priority, late May to early June— the only window when golden rice and lotus flowers overlap. Just be ready for crowds and heat
  • If comfort is the priority, late October-November, or April
  • Avoid August-September— it brings the heaviest rain plus the highest chance of typhoon landfall, which can cancel boat rides

Clothing and what to bring

  • Grippy sneakers are a must if you're climbing Mua Cave. The 486 stone steps get slippery in rain or high humidity. Flip-flops or heels are dangerous
  • There's almost no shade, so bring a hat and water without fail
  • For temples (Bai Dinh Pagoda, Hoa Lu), wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. A light scarf is handy to have on hand
  • Mornings and evenings get cold from November to February, so bring something to layer. Boats on the river feel even colder
