Facing Central Avenue, this shop is characterized by layering a modern interpretation onto the traditional cup brewed in the Vietnamese style with aphin (Vietnamese coffee filter) drip.It's one example of Vietnamese coffee spreading beyond the Asian community to the street corners of America's regional cities.
A shop that lit up on Central Avenue
The shop is along Central Avenue in the Grand Central District. When the local paper visited, Huy Ho, a Largo resident, was on hand preparing for the soft opening. While keeping the labor-intensive extraction of brewing one aluminum phin at a time, the shop's design takes on the air of a modern café. It's a stance of "tradition and modernity."
A cocktail-style menu is also in preparation
Say Coffee House is also preparing a cocktail-style drink menu built around coffee. Vietnamese coffee made with condensed milk has a strong sweetness and richness, giving it a wide range as a base for creative drinks. The thick liquid slowly dripped through a phin makes for a fresh experience for American customers.
Vietnamese coffee culture taking root in the US
In the US, with its Vietnamese population, shops serving phin and condensed-milk coffee are increasing in many places. The trend of drinks that were staples of immigrant communities opening up to general café-goers, as with Say Coffee House, is something Japanese Vietnam fans shouldn't miss either. The Vietnamese coffee you encounter abroad is becoming a gateway to the flavor of the home country.
