Noọng Ơi, the large café in Ho Chi Minh City's Hiep Binh Ward that earned a reputation as “like paradise,” reopened on August 17 under a new name: Thiên Cảnh Viên. The venue had been closed for about six months after a fire broke out on February 22, the sixth day of Tet (Lunar New Year). The site covers roughly 2,000 square meters, and a newly built artificial waterfall, 10 meters tall, now stands at its center.

Closed Six Months After a Tet Fire on February 22, the Former Noọng Ơi Renamed Thiên Cảnh Viên

The fire broke out on the sixth day of Tet, February 22. Flames that started in the first-floor cooking and storage area spread to flammable interior elements — wooden decorations, resin tables, artificial flowers. Local media put the burned area at around 600 square meters. The café shut down, and fire authorities ended up urging nearby cafés to review their fire safety management.

Rather than simply restoring it, the owner chose to rebuild the space entirely — including a new name, from Noọng Ơi to Thiên Cảnh Viên. A place once called “paradise in the city,” drawing over a thousand visitors on weekends before the fire, has come back with a different face after six months of construction.

Before the fire, the venue operated as “Noọng Ơi – Nhà Bên Suối” (“House Beside the Stream”), a combined café and restaurant whose draw was letting visitors enjoy food and photo-taking in one spot. Its riverside location on the Thu Duc side also helped create a feel removed from the bustle of downtown. That combined character has carried over under the new name.

A 10-Meter Waterfall and Tiled Roofs: 2,000 Square Meters Reimagined as an Old Eastern Town

The reopened space is themed around an old Eastern town centered on timber and tiled roofs. A waterfall over 10 meters tall anchors the center, surrounded by rock formations, ponds, winding paths, and buildings linked by covered walkways. It's a shift in emphasis, from a lush green garden to a landscape built around water, stone, and wooden architecture.

The pre-fire Noọng Ơi went viral on social media for dense foliage and wooden walkways that evoked “the Garden of Eden.” The renamed Thiên Cảnh Viên keeps the same experience-driven approach while cutting back on flammable artificial flowers and resin and adding more water features and stonework. The design combines a visual refresh with lessons learned from the fire.

50,000–70,000 Dong a Drink, About 700 Visitors a Day in the First Two Days

Drinks run 50,000 to 70,000 dong, roughly 290 to 400 yen, putting it in the mid-to-slightly-high range for a Ho Chi Minh City café. Turnout since reopening has been around 700 visitors a day over the first two days — still on its way back compared with the pre-fire level of 200 to 300 on weekdays and over 1,000 on weekends and holidays.

Item Before the Fire After Reopening (First Two Days)
Weekday visitors 200–300 per day About 700 per day
Weekends and holidays Over 1,000 per day Not yet counted
One drink 50,000–70,000 dong Same (about 290–400 yen)
Site area About 2,000 square meters About 2,000 square meters (the burned section fully rebuilt)

Exchange rates used are approximately 1 yen ≈ 175 dong and 1 US dollar ≈ 148 yen. Prices are subject to change.

In a Ho Chi Minh City Packed With Experience Cafés, What Thiên Cảnh Viên's Comeback Shows

In Ho Chi Minh City, more and more cafés are turning the space itself into the destination. There's theimmortal-cultivation-themed caféthat decorated itself with talismans and got so mobbed it was forced to temporarily close — cases like that show how buzz can pull in a rush of visitors while crowding and safety management become the challenge. Thiên Cảnh Viên's full rebuild, which also meant rethinking flammable interior materials, offers one answer to the risks that come with experience-driven cafés.

For visitors from Japan, the appeal is value: a few hours of immersive space for around 400 yen a drink. There's alsoa greenhouse café in Hanoi where you cross a koi pond on stepping stones— the kind of Vietnamese café where you go for the place, not the drink. It's worth factoring a half-day of your stay into spending at a spot like this, rather than rushing between sights.

Location, Timing, and Price to Know Before You Go

  • Location: Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City (now Hiep Binh Ward). About 30–40 minutes by taxi from District 1 downtown
  • Name: Formerly Noọng Ơi, now Thiên Cảnh Viên. Map apps may work with either the old or new name
  • Price: Drinks 50,000–70,000 dong (about 290–400 yen). Many such venues charge only for a drink to enter, though policies can change right after a reopening
  • Crowds: Around 700 visitors a day on weekdays. If you want photos of the waterfall and water features, weekday mornings are easier to work with than weekends
  • Pair it with coffee culture: downtown still hasalleyway coffee brewed through a cloth filter for around 70 yen a cup, letting you experience the full range of price and atmosphere in one visit

A 10-Meter Waterfall and 700 Visitors in Two Days: Worth a Weekday Morning on Your Itinerary

Six months after the Tet fire on February 22, the former Noọng Ơi has returned as Thiên Cảnh Viên, now built around a 10-meter waterfall. The figure of about 700 visitors a day over the first two days suggests that an experience café's pulling power and the rebuild that followed the fire are, for now, working together. If you're spending a few days in Ho Chi Minh City, it's worth the taxi ride out from District 1 to fit in a weekday morning photographing the water features.
