Violent crimes (such as murder and robbery) are fewer than in other countries, and overall public safety is relatively stable. The crimes foreign tourists most often get caught up in are minor ones like pickpocketing and bag-snatching, and caution is especially needed at tourist spots, nightlife districts, and on public transport.
Five crime patterns women traveling alone should watch out for
Bag-snatching by motorbike
The thing to be most wary of is bag-snatching using a motorbike.
Especially at tourist spots, nightlife districts, and night markets where people gather, crimes targeting pedestrians carrying belongings occur frequently. The perpetrator approaches quickly on a motorbike, grabs the bag or smartphone in your hand, and speeds off. Cases have been confirmed of targeting people walking while carrying mobile phones, second bags, attaché cases, pouches, and the like, centered on Japanese districts (Hanoi: the Kim Ma and Linh Lang areas; Ho Chi Minh City: the Le Thanh Ton and Thai Van Lung areas).

Pickpocketing at markets and on buses
Crowded markets and public transport are hotbeds for pickpockets.
Cases have been reported of the zippers of bags or waist pouches being opened without notice and wallets and the like taken, at crowded markets and streets visited by tourists, large shopping malls, or inside public transport such as long-distance buses and trains. Along with making a point of carrying your bag in front so it stays in view at all times, measures such as splitting up your valuables and cash are necessary.
Watch out for theft of unattended items
Theft of unattended belongings occurs in places where many people come and go, such as hotel and airport lobbies, restaurants, and large shopping malls.
Victims are caught off guard for a moment when they take their eyes off their luggage, such as during hotel check-in procedures or when someone speaks to them in the lobby. It's essential never to take your eyes off your belongings.
The risk of knockout robbery
Be wary of "kind offers" from strangers.
A seemingly kind local who speaks to you while sightseeing may in fact be plotting a scam or a knockout robbery targeting tourists. Cases have been reported in which a woman is taken to a home or hotel to eat and drink, loses consciousness, and upon waking finds all her money gone. Naturally, don't lightly accept invitations from strangers, and always keep your guard up with people you've just met, taking care never to casually eat or drink with them.
Fare trouble with taxis
Scams have been reported using unlicensed cabs posing as legitimate taxis or taxis with tampered fare meters.
When a tourist gets in, they may deliberately take a roundabout route and demand a high fare, or ask for an amount different from what was agreed in advance. We recommend using a reliable taxi company or making use of a ride-hailing app.
Safe areas and caution spots by major city
Hanoi: points of caution around the Old Quarter
In the capital, Hanoi, tourist attractions are scattered about, but among them the area to be careful of is around the Old Quarter.
The famous Old Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake is a popular tourist area with a nostalgic townscape and the lively atmosphere of Vietnam. Because it's also an area where many tourists stay, from luxury hotels to guesthouses, there are also numerous nightspots nearby. Among them, the one famous as Hanoi's largest nightspot is Ta Hien Street.
During the day it's a quiet shopping street with motorbikes and cars passing through, but at night it becomes a pedestrian zone, transforming into a drinking-street lined with rows of simple tables and chairs. It starts getting lively in the early evening, but since the crowds grow even more into the late night, the whole street is packed from around 9 p.m. In the dining areas there are many touts, some of them malicious, half-forcing people into seats. If they push aggressive solicitation or persistent negotiation on you, refuse clearly and leave the spot early.
Ho Chi Minh City: crime prevention in the economic hub
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest city, is developing as an economic center.
Out on the streets, you're overwhelmed by the ceaseless flow of motorbikes and the scenery mixing high-rise buildings with local shops. Centered on the Japanese districts (the Le Thanh Ton and Thai Van Lung areas), cases have been confirmed of perpetrators on motorbikes approaching from behind and snatching bags as they pass, targeting people walking while carrying mobile phones or second bags. Especially in these areas, ample caution is needed when using a mobile phone outdoors during nighttime hours.
Da Nang: points of caution around the Dragon Bridge
Da Nang, famous as a resort facing the sea, has few densely crowded tourist spots, making it an area with better public safety than other cities.
However, the spot to be careful of is the Dragon Bridge (Rong Bridge) over the Han River. Shaped like a dragon, this massive structure, full of impact, is even recorded in the Guinness records as the "world's longest steel dragon" at 666 meters. Because the Dragon Bridge is lit up every night, it's also popular as a night-view spot.
That said, because the Dragon Bridge connects the beach side and central Da Nang, it's a place with heavy traffic day and night. In Vietnam, where motorbikes outnumber cars, many motorbikes cross the bridge at high speed, so if you force your way across the roadway there's a risk of a collision. Caution is needed.
Furthermore, at the Dragon Bridge, a show where the dragon breathes fire is held on Saturday and Sunday nights. Because you can watch this powerful show for free, it's so popular that not only tourists but also locals flock to it. The show starts at 9 p.m., and during that time vehicles are temporarily blocked off. The bridge becomes a pedestrian zone, but at that time it's easy to fall victim to pickpocketing and theft while blending into the crowd, so be thorough about managing your own valuables and bags.
