Hue–Phong Nha Heritage Train Launches September 1: A 4-Hour-40-Minute Ride Through Central Vietnam

Vietnam Railways (VNR) will start running a tourist train linking the ancient capital of Hue with the remote central gem of Phong Nha on September 1, 2026. The roughly 190km stretch to the gateway of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, home to the world's largest cave, Son Doong, has until now only been reachable by public bus or chartered car. Now it can be covered on a single morning-departure, midday-arrival train. This one train changes how a northbound trip through central Vietnam can be put together.

A Daytime Route: Hue 7:15 a.m. Departure, Troóc 11:55 a.m. Arrival

Train HQ2 departs Hue Station at 7:15 a.m., passing through Dong Ha, My Trach, and Dong Hoi before arriving at Troóc Station at 11:55 a.m. — a journey of about 4 hours 40 minutes. The return train, HQ1, leaves Troóc Station at 1:15 p.m. and arrives back in Hue at 5:25 p.m. (about 4 hours 10 minutes). Since both directions run during the day, the design assumes passengers are riding for the scenery. That's a clear departure from Vietnam's traditional Reunification Express, which makes its money on overnight sleeper berths.

The terminus, Troóc, is a station close to the town of Phong Nha, and it serves as the base for heading to Son Doong Cave or Paradise Cave. Dong Hoi, along the way, has an airport, so travelers can either fly in from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and connect to the train, or head north from Hue by train — two ways to use the route.

8 Cars, 304 Seats — 360-Degree Swivel Seats and a VIP Car Take Center Stage

The train is made up of 8 cars with a capacity of 304 passengers. That breaks down to 5 standard cars fitted with 360-degree swivel soft seats (56 seats each), 1 VIP car (24 seats), and one car each for a community-culture showcase and for service/entertainment. The seats swivel so passengers can face the direction of travel or the view, a feature suited to a train built around scenery.

Onboard, passengers can browse and buy specialty products selected under the local One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, sample regional dishes from across central Vietnam, and watch traditional performing arts. The interior reportedly draws on the golden-brown of the Hue royal palace, the green of Phong Nha-Ke Bang, and the peace motifs of Quang Tri. The idea is to turn the journey itself into an experience of touring central Vietnam; Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman Hoang Xuan Tan frames it as being “in line with regional tourism cooperation strategy, raising the value of cultural heritage.”

From 360,000 Dong (About 2,100 Yen) One Way — What It Means for a Japanese Traveler's Budget

Fares start at 360,000 dong one way (about 2,100 yen, or roughly 13.72 US dollars). At a bit over 4 hours of travel for a few thousand yen, this is a bargain compared with chartering a car for the same stretch, and factoring in the scenery and onboard experience, it's a price range that more than pays for itself.

As of just before launch, the number of services, fares by seat class, and the official ticket sales method hadn't all been announced. A price difference between VIP and standard cars is likely, so check the confirmed fares and booking method through Vietnam Railways' official channels before you travel. Combined with Dong Hoi Airport, you could also build an itinerary that stays entirely within central Vietnam: fly into Hue, take the train to Phong Nha, go cave-touring, and fly home from Dong Hoi.

One Train Connecting Four World-Heritage-Caliber Sites

The value of this train lies in the string of World Heritage-caliber sights along its route. The starting point, Hue, has the World Heritage Complex of Hue Monuments; partway along, Quang Tri has an old citadel and the underground Vietnam War fortress of Vinh Moc Tunnels; and near the terminus lies Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, home to the world's largest cave, Son Doong. No other route in central Vietnam lets you string together such different kinds of heritage — dynastic culture, war history, and a massive karst cave — in a single day without changing trains.

Son Doong Cave itself is a narrow gate — a costly, permit-only trek — but Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave are easy to enter by boat or on foot. The classic itinerary of riding the train to the terminus and touring Phong Nha's caves the next day can now be put together more cheaply, and without the hassle of changing trains, than before.

Summary: A New Gateway for Traveling the Length of Central Vietnam

For Japanese travelers whose trips to central Vietnam have tended to lean toward Da Nang and Hoi An, this opens a direct option running north from Hue to Phong Nha. If you're entering via Hue after September 1, it's worth rebuilding your itinerary around the 7:15 a.m. heritage train.
