The "imperial cuisine experience" at the Hue Citadel—especially popular with Japanese

The Hue Citadel (the Nguyen Dynasty Imperial City) is one of Vietnam's most prestigious historical heritage sites. At the "Imperial Cuisine Space,"held every afternoon within this citadel from April 24 to May 2, you can enjoy a special menu that faithfully re-creates the Nguyen Dynasty's court cuisine.

Hue cuisine is known even within Vietnam for its "delicacy" and "variety," with more than 200 recipes refined by the chefs who once served the court. The style of combining various items in small plates hasan aesthetic akin to Japan's kaiseki cuisine, and is especially highly regarded by Japanese travelers.

April 29 and May 1's "Royal Banquet Nights"—a special banquet with live music

On the two days of April 29 and May 1, a special banquet is held at the"Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theater,"which dates from the Nguyen Dynasty. It's a luxurious evening enjoying royal cuisine while listening to live "Nha Nhac" (court music), Vietnam's traditional music inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Since this theater is normally closed to the public, it's a special experience available only during the festival. Advance booking may be required, so if you're planningan itinerary heading south to Hue from a Hanoi trip,we recommend checking early.

April 25–28: free nighttime entry to the Hue Citadel

On the nights of April 25 to 28,free entryto the Hue Citadel is opened. It's a magical experience where traditional costumes and art performances unfold against the backdrop of the lit-up citadel architecture. Hue at night, showing a different face from daytime sightseeing, is especially popular with photography lovers too.

Access to Hue—routes from Japan

  1. Via Hanoi: Japan → Hanoi (Noi Bai Airport) → Hue (Phu Bai Airport). Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and others operate multiple flights a day. Flight about 1 hour.
  2. Via Da Nang: Japan → Da Nang → Hue (about 1.5 hours by land). The land route from Da Nang over the Hai Van Pass has splendid scenery too.
  3. Via Ho Chi Minh City: Japan → Ho Chi Minh City → Hue (flight about 1 hour). Ideal for a circuit plan combined with southern sightseeing too.

Hue's Q1 2026 tourism data

Hue welcomedover 1.9 million touristsin the first quarter of 2026, with tourism revenue exceeding 4.47 trillion Vietnamese dong. The city has set a target of drawing 7–7.5 million tourists a year, and April–May, the festival season, is the most important period for attracting visitors.

Summary

The summer series of the Hue Festival 2026 is held at a time overlapping with Japan's Golden Week period (late April to early May). The program—condensing Hue's distinctive cultural experiences of royal cuisine, traditional performing arts, and the citadel's nighttime opening—clearly shows a "reason to go to Hue," not just Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

For anyone planning a Vietnam trip, we strongly recommend a 1–2 night extension to Hue.
