A sacred site of Da Lat-born specialty coffee

Da Lat, a highland city in south-central Vietnam. Located at an elevation of about 1,500 meters, this city has been known as a summer resort since the French colonial era, but in these past few years it has drawn attention for another face: its role as a major producing region for Vietnamese-grown Arabica coffee. The one leading Da Lat's coffee scene is La Viet Coffee.

Its quality is highly rated at home and abroad, and it is steadily raising its presence in the specialty coffee world, including participating in the UCC Coffee Contest 2025 (the 11th, held in Da Lat) in April 2025. On Tripadvisor it consistently ranks near the top in Da Lat's café rankings, earning high ratings in travelers' reviews too.

Recommended menu

La Viet Coffee's appeal lies in a pricing that is astonishingly reasonable for specialty coffee. Coffee of a quality that would cost 500 to 800 yen a cup at a specialty café in Japan or Australia can be enjoyed here at an unbelievable price.

The first thing you should try is the Latte. For just 40,000 VND (about 240 yen), you can enjoy the harmony of milk with the delicate flavor of Arabica beans grown in the Da Lat highlands. Because it uses beans freshly roasted in-store, the richness of aroma you can't get from store-bought beans stands out.

The Affogato is an outrageous price of 35,000 VND (about 210 yen). This dessert drink, pouring rich espresso over vanilla ice cream, is exceptional when tasted in Da Lat's cool climate. The contrast between the coffee's bitterness and the ice cream's sweetness is exquisite, a dish you can recommend to coffee connoisseurs and beginners alike.

For those who want to enjoy the coffee's flavor straight, single-origin coffee brewed by hand drip or AeroPress is recommended. Centered on Da Lat Arabica, it also stocks beans from around the world such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Guatemala, but the local Arabica beans are still the most popular. A feature is the light-to-medium roast that lets you feel the character of the origin.

It also does retail of coffee beans, available from about 170,000 VND (about 1,020 yen) for 250g. Since you can take home fresh beans with the roast date clearly noted, it is the best choice as a souvenir for coffee lovers.

A distinctive space from a renovated warehouse

The first thing that surprises you when visiting La Viet Coffee is the sense of scale of its space. Rather than a café, this store, a renovated vast warehouse that should be called a "coffee factory," stands out among Da Lat's cafés in a class of its own.

This space at 200 Nguyen Cong Tru Street is a building originally used as a coffee bean processing warehouse. Inside the high-ceilinged warehouse coexist a café space, a coffee class, a bean sales area, and a glass-partitioned roasting lab. The sight of jute sacks of coffee beans stacked here and there and a giant dry mill (processing machine) sitting in place is a scene befitting a sacred site of coffee.

This dry mill has the capacity to process one ton of green beans per hour, and you can watch it actually operating up close. Drinking coffee while listening to the sound of the roaster turning through the glass is an experience unique to La Viet that you can't get at other cafés.

In the industrial-design interior, rough elements such as concrete walls, exposed piping, and metal fixtures line up, yet it is finished into a space that feels strangely warm. Perhaps the wooden tables, leather sofas, and streaming natural light soften the factory-like atmosphere. There are "photogenic" spots everywhere, and you often see travelers enjoying photography.

Da Lat's cool climate also enhances the appeal of this space. Unlike the muggy heat of Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, Da Lat, with an annual average temperature of 18 to 25 degrees, is the perfect environment for slowly enjoying hot coffee. Since it's even chilly morning and night, time spent soaking in the warehouse café's atmosphere with a warm latte in hand will surely become a special memory of a Vietnam trip.

Hours:7:00 to 22:00 (open year-round)

Access:About 5 minutes by car from the center of Da Lat. From Da Lat Cathedral or Xuan Huong Lake it's about 10,000 to 15,000 VND by taxi or Grab. Show the address to the driver and, since it's a café famous locally, you won't get lost.

Guide to length of stay:If you're just having coffee, 30 minutes to an hour. If you want to enjoy touring the roasting lab, buying beans, and photography, allow 1.5 to 2 hours. If you join a coffee class (workshop), advance reservation is required.

Ordering tips:There is an English menu, and staff can handle basic English. If it's your first time, a Da Lat Arabica latte is recommended. If you know coffee well, ask the staff for their recommended beans. They'll surely explain the beans' characteristics and roast level enthusiastically.

Souvenirs:You can buy freshly roasted coffee beans (from 250g) in-store. Since the roast date is clearly noted, you can enjoy them fresh even after returning home. They'll also vacuum-pack them, so they're easy to bring home as a souvenir.

How to get to Da Lat:From Ho Chi Minh City it's about 50 minutes by VietJet Air or Vietnam Airlines domestic flight (using Lien Khuong Airport). By bus it's about 6 to 7 hours. Since Da Lat itself is a popular tourist spot, we recommend planning a two-day, one-night or longer itinerary and enjoying a café tour including La Viet.
