Vietnam's up-and-coming carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways opens a Bangkok–Phu Quoc route on August 8, 2026. Running once daily each way on an Airbus A320neo, the flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. On July 22, VietnamPlus reported that this route is the carrier's sixth international destination. Since Bangkok has flights from all over Japan, for Japanese travelers it means one more way into Phu Quoc island. Seen from residents' side, it's one more exit from the island out into Southeast Asia.
Service from August 8: a scale of one round trip a day, or 14 flights a week
At the time of the original article, it only said 'plans to start daily flights next month,' but AeroRoutes, which specializes in flight schedules, and the company's press release distributed in Thailand bothAugust 8, 2026as the launch date. Since the date is consistent across outlets, it can be taken as fixed.
The number of flights1 round trip/dayCounted by one-way flights it's 14 a week, but counted by round trips it's seven a week. For this kind of route news, how outlets count “X flights a week” differs, so when planning your schedule it's quicker to check by round trips. Actual times, per AeroRoutes' listing, are 9G701 from Phu Quoc (departing 10:35, arriving Bangkok 11:55) and 9G702 from Bangkok (departing 13:10, arriving Phu Quoc 14:30). Since Vietnam and Thailand are both UTC+7 with no time difference, the gap between the listed times is close to the actual flight time.
The aircraft leaves the island in the morning and turns around in Bangkok at midday. Ground time on the Bangkok side is only 1 hour 15 minutes, leaving little room to absorb delays.
Read as "the sixth country," the count doesn't add up
The original wording is 'sixth international destination' -- that is, the sixth international destination served, not the sixth country. The source names those five explicitly, andTaipei, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, in that order. Chengdu and Hong Kong are both China, so recounting by country or region gives only four—Taiwan, China, South Korea, and Singapore. Even adding Bangkok makes five.
It looks like a small distinction, but it changes the character of the network. Spread across six countries, it would be a broad, thin deployment; in fact it is concentrating on major cities in East and Southeast Asia to build depth. And Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore and Bangkok are all cities with plenty of direct flights from Japan. It's closer to reality to read it as five connecting airports familiar to Japanese travelers lined up against a single island, Phu Quoc.

One full-service slot enters a sky held by LCCs
The original article says the market linking Bangkok and Phu QuocUntil now served mainly by low-cost carriers, it writes. Sun PhuQuoc Airways is a full-service carrier under the Sun Group, and even in its announcements aimed at Thailand it puts front and center its positioning as “the first full-service Vietnamese airline linking the two cities.”
The fare is a one-way, taxes and fees included,From 2,250 bahtis the promotion on offer. On July 27, 2026, the Thai baht traded at 4.85-4.88 yen, and at 4.87 yen to the baht that works out to about 11,000 yen. But conditions apply: it covers flights departing within a month of launch, and seats are limited. Treat it as a launch-month teaser rather than a standing rate. Existing budget carriers sometimes post fares even lower than this, so on price alone it can be no contest.
The press release also states that fares come with a Sun World Hon Thom cable-car ticket and up to 30% off at Sun Group lodging, dining, wellness and entertainment facilities. It's a way of selling on the total—not just the airfare but the facilities you'll use on the island. Conditions for meals and checked baggage aren't in the release, so you can only confirm them on the booking screen.

A carrier with three international routes in the first half says it aims for 18 by year-end. Fifteen routes in six months is a bold number, and even alongside a fleet plan of 32 aircraft, that leaves thin coverage per route. The Bangkok route staying at one round trip a day can be read as a reflection of that tight allocation.
What the company says, and what it doesn't
Speaking at the route announcement was La Vinh Nam, the company's deputy commercial director. He explained that the airline positions Thailand not as a competitor but as an important partner in two-way tourism promotion and in attracting international transit passengers. For a carrier entering the crowded Bangkok market as a latecomer, the phrasing suggests a stance of avoiding head-on price competition.
He added that, even amid geopolitical tensions and a global squeeze on aircraft supply, bookings are holding firm and deliveries are expected to proceed on schedule. It's a statement that lays out the plan's own preconditions — conversely, if deliveries slip, the 18-route plan moves too.
On Sun Group's side, materials released for Thailand note that chairman Dang Minh Truong discussed the idea of "Two Countries, One Destination" with Thailand's prime minister. The plan is to build multi-city tour products linking Phu Quoc with Phuket, Koh Samui, Da Nang and others. Rather than opening a standalone route, this is a line drawn on the premise of selling the two countries' islands as a set.
The standing fare level, the in-flight service, and any post-launch plans to add flights, meanwhile, appear in none of the materials.
For travelers from Japan, the route changes in that connection points grow to five
For getting from Japan to Phu Quoc, the realistic choice until now has been connecting in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. To that are added Taipei, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Singapore—and from August, Bangkok. It means a lineup of routes that reach the island without a domestic connection inside Vietnam.
On timing, the Bangkok departure is 13:10. Many overnight flights from Japan arrive in Bangkok early in the morning, so there's room to connect the same day. But the wait is long, so decide in advance how to spend it at Suvarnabhumi. The return leaves Phu Quoc at 10:35, so you can't build in a morning on the island before departure, and the last day's plans have to be wrapped up the day before.
One thing to watch here is how separately booked tickets are handled when you string them together. If they aren't on the same reservation, then as a rule it's on you if an earlier flight is late and you miss the next. Compensation rules for delays are being put in place for flights to and from Vietnam (Full refund for a four-hour delay: the money business travelers can recover under Vietnam's new rules), it won't cover you for a separate cross-border booking's connection. Don't shave your layover -- build in extra time to be safe.
It's worth sorting out entry rules too. For Japanese nationals, Resolution 44/NQ-CP issued on March 7, 2025 (effective March 15) grants a 45-day visa exemption throughout Vietnam. This measure has been extended to March 2028. Phu Quoc has a separate 30-day visa-exemption exception regardless of nationality, but it requires entering directly from abroad by air or sea and staying only in Phu Quoc without stopping on the Vietnamese mainland. With a Japanese passport the 45-day exemption has looser terms, so there's little need to rely on the exception. It comes into play when a companion holds a different nationality.
A bet on making the island a hub, and the reshuffling of Vietnam's skies
On its own it's just a short-haul route with one round trip a day. What the company is after lies beyond that: making Phu Quoc a connecting hub. It receives passengers from Taipei, Seoul and Bangkok on the island and feeds them onto domestic flights. When Nam touches on attracting international transfer passengers, this is the design he means.
The infrastructure to absorb it is under construction. Phu Quoc International Airport is expanding ahead of the 2027 APEC summit and, over the long term, aims to handle 50 million passengers a year, VietnamPlus reports. Vietnam's air gateways are in a phase of reshuffling over a span of years, including the opening of Long Thanh Airport near Ho Chi Minh City (Giant Long Thanh airport opens December 1: how to use it alongside SGN?), and within that, Phu Quoc is positioning itself as a tourism-focused third pole.
There's a demand-side tailwind too. The island's exposure as a filming location is growing, with moves to feature it in Korean content as well (A K-drama crew heads to Phu Quoc—go before it becomes the next filming-location mecca). With the Seoul and Bangkok routes running at the same time, it's easier to turn that exposure into actual passenger traffic.
But the four A330s are earmarked for long-haul routes to Russia and Kazakhstan, so the company is trying to stand up a short-haul hub and long-haul customer draw at the same time. If aircraft grow scarce, priority may go to the higher-yield long-haul side. Building future itineraries on expected Bangkok-route frequency increases is premature at this stage.

Summary
It comes down to three things. First, if you plan to visit the island in August, check for seats while the launch-month promo fares last. Second, if you're building the trip from Japan, place the 13:10 outbound and 10:35 return in your itinerary first, then choose the surrounding flights on the premise of not shaving connection time. When stringing together separate bookings, always leave slack you can absorb yourself if there's a delay. Third, decide up front whether to combine it with travel inside Vietnam—because whether you stop on the mainland changes which visa framework applies.
How this route stacks up will be decided by the fares after the launch-month promotion ends. If nothing forces your hand, it's not too late to decide after seeing the fare tables one or two months in.
