This article explains in detail the current state and changes of Vietnam's e-visa that Japanese travelers should know, along with a practical application guide.
What is Vietnam's e-visa
The e-visa (electronic visa) is a visa you can apply for and obtain online, applied for through Vietnam's official site (evisa.gov.vn). No paper visa or embassy procedure is needed, and it can be completed entirely from a smartphone.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Validity period | Up to 90 days |
| Entry type | Single entry or multiple entry (multiple entries allowed) |
| Fee (single) | 25 US dollars (about 3,750 yen) |
| Fee (multiple) | 50 US dollars (about 7,500 yen) |
| Supported entry points | 83 locations (air, land, and sea) |
| Processing time | Usually within 3 business days |
| Application site | evisa.gov.vn (official) |
Changes from the 2023 revision through 2026
The major revision of August 2023 (current standard)
The revision that took effect on August 15, 2023 made the e-visa far easier to use. Before that it was a maximum of 30 days and single entry only, but after the revision it changed as follows.
- Length of stay: up to 30 days → up to 90 daysextended
- Entry type: single only → multiple entry also selectable
- Supported entry points: about 41 → 42カ所に拡大(2025年12月の決議389号でさらに41カ所が追加され、現在は83カ所に)
This revision places Vietnam's e-visa among the more convenient in Southeast Asia's major countries, dramatically improving usability for both tourists and business travelers.
New visa category planned for July 2026
From July 1, 2026, two new visa categories for IT, digital technology, and specialized talent are set to be introduced.
| Visa type | Target | Validity period |
|---|---|---|
| UĐ1 | High-quality digital technology and specialized talent | Up to 5 years |
| UĐ2 | Spouses and children under 18 of UĐ1 holders | Up to 5 years |
This is positioned as part of the national strategy for Vietnam to become a "digital economy powerhouse," giving IT professionals and entrepreneurs even more reason to choose Vietnam as a base.
Should Japanese travelers choose visa exemption or an e-visa
Japan and Vietnam signed a 45-day visa-exemption agreement in 2023. In terms of "no procedure needed for short-term tourism," it's the simplest method. However, in the following cases, an e-visa is more suitable.
| Situation | Recommended | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pure tourism within 45 days | Visa exemption | No procedure, zero cost |
| Long stay of 46–90 days | E-visa (single) | Stay of up to 90 days possible |
| Trips combined with neighboring countries | E-visa (multiple) | Can exit once and re-enter |
| Business travel (meetings, negotiations) | E-visa | Business purpose is stated |
| Work or long-term residence | Work visa, etc. | E-visa does not permit work |
E-visa application steps (complete guide for Japanese travelers)
Step 1: Access the official site
Be sure to useevisa.gov.vn(official Vietnamese government). Agency sites incur extra fees. Switch the language to English at the top right of the page and proceed.
Step 2: Prepare the required documents
- Passport scan (validity of at least 6 months required)
- Photo (equivalent to 4cm × 6cm, white background, taken within 3 months)
- Accommodation address (hotel name and address)
- Credit card (Visa/Mastercard)
Step 3: Fill out the online form
Enter your personal information, purpose of travel, planned entry date, entry point (airport name, etc.), and accommodation on the application form. Fill everything out in English.
Step 4: Payment and submission
Pay 25 dollars for single or 50 dollars for multiple by credit card and complete the application. An application number is issued, so be sure to save it.
Step 5: Review and receipt
The e-visa PDF usually arrives by email within 3 business days. Print it and present it on entry (presentation on a smartphone may also be possible).
Common mistakes and points to note
- Entry point errors: If the entry point specified at application differs from the airport you actually arrive at, it causes trouble. Check and enter the official names, such as Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) and Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City).
- Passport validity: At least 6 months of remaining validity is required on entry. Don't forget to renew.
- Beware of agency sites: Searching "Vietnam visa application" may bring up agency sites at the top. Applying anywhere other than the government official site (evisa.gov.vn) incurs unnecessary costs.
- No overlap with visa exemption: After entering under visa exemption, you generally must exit within 45 days. Extensions require a separate procedure from the e-visa.
83 entry points: checking the main ones
The entry points mainly used by Japanese travelers are as follows.
| Airport name | Location | Supported routes (examples) |
|---|---|---|
| Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) | Hanoi | Direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, and others |
| Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) | Ho Chi Minh City | Direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and others |
| Da Nang International Airport (DAD) | Da Nang | Direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya |
| Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) | Nha Trang | Some charter flights |
| Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) | Phu Quoc Island, | Some direct and connecting flights |
Information related to traveling to Vietnam in 2026
Now that entry procedures for Vietnam have become smoother, it's easier to plan a trip. During Golden Week (late April to early May),"Ha Long Bay Carnival 2026"is being held, and more Japanese travelers are using the e-visa to plan longer trips.
Also, in Ho Chi Minh City, on the Saigon River, the 3rd River Festival 2026is being held throughout April, creating an environment where you can enjoy events right after entering the country.
Furthermore, tourist arrivals in Q1 2026 hit a record high, which shows that Vietnam's capacity to welcome tourists has been improving. Precisely because travelers are increasing, checking your visa in advance and booking early has become important.
