This time it was bio-gasoline that rose: E10 RON95-V hit 25,060 dong per liter in Region 2, surpassing its previous high. Converted at roughly 170 dong to the yen, that's about 147 yen. It's a reversal from just last month, when E10 prices dropped in August — and every fill-up now adds up for residents and business travelers getting around on rented motorbikes.

New prices took effect from 3pm on September 4

Vietnam's fuel prices are reviewed periodically by the authorities (the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance), with new prices applying from 3pm on the revision date. In the September 4 round, gasoline rose — E5 RON92 up 672 dong, E10 RON95-III up 723 dong. Diesel and mazut (fuel oil), on the other hand, fell, with prices moving in different directions depending on the fuel type. This runs counter to the previous round, whenE10 dropped to around 134 yen a liter in August's revision— moved in the opposite direction.

E10 RON95-V Hits a High of 25,060 Dong in Region 2

The main retail prices announced this time are as follows. Yen conversions use a rough rate of 170 dong to the yen. Region 1 covers areas near ports and fuel depots, while Region 2 covers remote areas with longer transport distances, where the price ceiling is set slightly higher.

Fuel type

New price (dong/L)

Approximate yen conversion

E5 RON92

About 22,486

About 132 yen

E10 RON95-III (Region 1)

23,270

About 137 yen

E10 RON95-III (Region 2)

23,730

About 140 yen

E10 RON95-V (Region 1)

24,570

About 145 yen

E10 RON95-V (Region 2)

25,060

About 147 yen

E10 RON95-V in Region 2, at 25,060 dong, is the highest level this time around. E5 RON92 and E10 RON95-III both rose from the previous round, while diesel fell by 340 dong.

How Prices Split Between Region 1 and Region 2

Even for the same fuel type, prices can differ by several hundred dong depending on where you fill up. Region 2, farther from urban centers, carries higher transport costs, so its ceiling price is set higher. Downtown Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi generally fall under Region 1, but head out on a motorbike trip into the countryside and you shift into Region 2 pricing. The difference might be just a few yen per tank, but it adds up over a long-distance ride with multiple fill-ups.

E10 Became the Nationwide Standard in June

The "E5" and "E10" labels you see at stations refer to the ethanol blend ratio. E5 replaces 5% of the gasoline with plant-based ethanol, E10 replaces 10%. Vietnam has been rolling out E5 since 2018 and made E10 mandatory nationwide on June 1, 2026. E10 is now the standard for RON95-grade fuel too, and the published price tables are now centered on E10 RON95. Most two-wheelers run fine on E10, but for older vehicles or some imported cars, it's worth checking the manufacturer's guidance first, just to be safe.

A Full Tank for a Rented Motorbike Runs About 100,000 Dong

Scooters that are easy to rent around town, like the Honda Vision or Air Blade, have tanks in the 4-5 liter class. Filling up from a low tank with E10 RON95 runs to around 100,000 dong, roughly 600 yen. Riding mainly around town uses about 2 liters per 100km, so one fill-up can last several days. At the pump, saying "đổ đầy" (fill it up) or naming an amount (like "50,000 dong worth") usually gets the message across. Checking the meter reading against what you pay afterward helps avoid any mix-up over the amount.

Diesel Falls by 340 Dong as Fuel Prices Move in Different Directions

This round saw gasoline rise while diesel 0.05S-II fell 340 dong to 27,740 dong (about 163 yen), and mazut dropped 500 dong. Buses, taxis, and freight run on diesel, so a drop in that price tends to ease the pressure toward sudden fare hikes. That said, ride-hailing apps like Grab and Be also adjust fares based on supply and demand, so fuel prices alone don't determine the fare.Combining the metro with ride-hailing— gives you a way to get around that's less exposed to swings in gasoline prices.

Prices Move With Scheduled Revisions and a Stabilization Fund

Vietnam's fuel prices are reviewed periodically by the authorities in line with global crude oil prices. To soften sudden swings, there's a Petroleum Price Stabilization Fund; this round, 200 dong per liter was set aside into the fund for diesel and 200 dong per kg for mazut. Contributions to and withdrawals from the fund make retail prices move more gently than crude prices alone would suggest. Not every fuel type moves the same direction with each revision — as with this round, gasoline can rise while diesel falls.

Gasoline Costs Are Creeping Back Up Amid Rising Prices

Gasoline, like food and rent, feeds directly into residents' monthly spending.Vietnam's younger generation turning to thrift amid rising prices— cost-cutting moves like this are showing up everywhere. In a city where getting around by motorbike is a given, even a rise of a few yen per liter adds up through daily commutes and errands. The more often you fill up, the more it helps to know the gap between Region 1 and Region 2 and roughly what a full tank costs, for keeping track of your budget.

Practical Points for Residents to Keep in Mind

E5 and E10 rose from 3pm on September 4, while diesel fell

E10 RON95-V hit a high of 25,060 dong (about 147 yen) in Region 2

A full tank of E10 for a scooter runs about 100,000 dong (about 600 yen)

Region 2 (remote areas) has a higher price ceiling, making it costlier for countryside touring

Since the next revision could shift things again, check the day's price table before filling up

Sources

Thanh Niên「Giá xăng dầu hôm nay 4/9/2026: Xăng E10 lên mức cao nhất 25.000 đồng/lít」

Việt Nam News「E10 biofuel rolled out nationwide」

Vietnam's fuel prices were revised from 3pm on September 4, 2026.
