The outbound service from Hue (HQ2) departs at 7:15 a.m. and arrives at Phong Nha's gateway station, To Loc, at 11:55 a.m.; the return service (HQ1) leaves To Loc at 1:15 p.m. and arrives back in Hue at 5:25 p.m., a one-way trip of about four and a half hours. The launch fell right before the National Day (September 2) holiday, and during the inaugural week of August 29-September 5, all seat classes were discounted up to 50%. It adds an option to central Vietnam's world-heritage circuit, previously dominated by car and bus travel, letting you enjoy the journey itself while taking in the scenery through the window. For Japanese travelers, this becomes a route for covering the world heritage sites north of Hue in one go, following on from the southern route anchored by Da Nang and Hoi An.

360-degree swivel seats and an onboard theater: inside the 8-car train

The train has 8 cars with a capacity of about 304 passengers. Five of those cars are soft-seat carriages with 360-degree swivel seats, 56 seats per car. Because you can freely change which way your seat faces, you won't miss the view whether it's the mountain side or the coast.

The remaining three cars define this train's character. The 24-seat VIP car offers a semi-private space with drinks and light snacks. The regional culture car (community car) hosts live folk music performances, local Hue and Quang Tri dishes, and sales of OCOP-certified (One Commune, One Product) local specialties. And the entertainment car, said to be a first for Vietnam's railways, is loaded with an onboard theater screening films, massage chairs, ao dai rental for photos, and even a made-to-measure suit-fitting service on the spot. An audio guide system for destinations is also built in, letting you preview the next sightseeing spot while en route.

The exact fares haven't been announced, but the discount framework is clear. During the launch week (August 29-September 5), all seat classes are discounted up to 50%. From September 6 through the end of 2026, the outbound leg gets a 15% discount, with a further 10% added on the return leg. Holding a ticket also gets you a 5-15% discount at partner shops in Quang Tri Province and elsewhere. Bookings can be made through Vietnam Railways' official website or the dedicated "Journey to Wonders" site.

About 190km from Hue to Phong Nha, 5 stations linked by a single line

The roughly 190km line links the stations of Hue, Dong Ha, My Chanh, Dong Hoi, and To Loc. Along the route sit the Complex of Hue Monuments (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993), the old Quang Tri Citadel, the Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River that still bear traces of the North-South division, the underground Vinh Moc Tunnels, and, near the end of the line, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang, registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2003, is a limestone karst region holding more than 300 caves, including Son Doong, the world's largest cave. Together with Hue, Hoi An, and My Son, it's long been introduced as part of central Vietnam's "world heritage road," and this train now runs a single line straight through that backbone. Central Vietnam continues to work on polishing its historical heritage as a tourism resource,Bao Dai's Hillside Retreat in Nha Trang: French-Era Villas 'Vong Nguyet' and 'Nghinh Phong' Reopen to the Publicas seen in cases where buildings from an earlier era are being reopened one after another.

How does it compare to bus or chartered car?

Until now, open tour buses or a chartered private car have been the main way to travel between Hue and Phong Nha. Here's how each mode of transport compares.

Means

Travel time (one-way, approximate)

Frequency and flexibility

Scenery and onboard experience

Suited to

Heritage train (HQ1/HQ2)

About 4.5 hours

One round trip a day, fixed schedule

360-degree seats, onboard theater, dining and shopping

For those who want to enjoy the journey itself

Open tour bus

About 4-5 hours

Multiple departures, relatively cheap

Scenery from your seat only

For those keeping costs down

Chartered private car

About 3.5-4 hours

Free choice of departure time and stopovers

Door to door

Small groups and families

The train's strength is that, in exchange for a fixed schedule, the four and a half hours on board don't feel tedious. On the flip side, you have to fit your plans around the single daily round trip, departing at 7:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., with no freedom to stop at a spot that catches your eye along the way. For anyone wanting to start exploring Phong Nha's caves early in the morning, or to make a detour on the way back, a chartered car is still the better fit.

How locals and travelers are responding

During the launch week, events were arranged too, such as hands-on local cooking experiences and prize games on board. For locals, it's significant that Quang Tri Province, which had often been merely passed through, is now built into the tourism flow as a stop on the line. VNR positions this new service as an effort to "strengthen regional tourism links and expand lower-impact rail tourism." Travelers' interest is focused on views of central Vietnam's countryside and coastline from the swivel seats, and the novelty of changing into an ao dai for photos on board.

How Japanese travelers can get the most out of it

Thinking through practical usage, the best move is to take the train both ways. From September 6, the 15% outbound discount plus an additional 10% on the return means the more you use the round trip for the same route, the lower the per-trip cost. A two- to three-night itinerary fits well: spend one or two nights in Hue touring the monuments, take the outbound train to Phong Nha, spend a night there for cave sightseeing, then take the return train back.

On timing, the 7:15 a.m. departure from Hue assumes you've stayed the night beforehand. Since Hue is about two to three hours by car from Da Nang, where the airport is, a realistic plan for travelers from Japan is: fly into Da Nang, stay overnight in Hue, then catch the morning train. Arriving at To Loc at 11:55 a.m. leaves the afternoon free for Phong Nha Cave or Thien Duong Cave (Paradise Cave). Even for cave sightseeing, which tends to mean lots of gear, a train with wide seats you can rest in preserves more stamina than a long-distance bus. Since fares convertible to yen haven't been published yet, check the latest local pricing before you go.

Connecting Phong Nha's caves with Hoi An and My Son to the south

On the Phong Nha side, the main sights are Phong Nha Cave, entered by boat, and Thien Duong Cave, with its well-maintained walkway. With energy to spare, you can also add activities at Dark Cave further in. After heading back toward Hue, many travelers continue south toward Da Nang and Hoi An. Events overlap across the region during the holiday period,A special Cham song-and-dance performance, only on September 2, at the My Son SanctuaryandHoi An's Old Quarter opens a creative week on 8/28, six days touring workshops and craftspeople over the holidaywith heritage-linked events like this one held around the same time. Splitting roles, train north of Hue, car south of it, lets you cross central Vietnam without straining your schedule.

In short: aim for weekdays after September 6

The holiday right after launch offers the highest discount rate, but it overlaps with the national holiday and tends to get crowded. For a calmer ride, it's safer to pick a weekday after September 6, when the discount is still running and the sights are quieter. This is a new arrival that links two world heritage sites, Hue and Phong Nha, along a single line, scenery and onboard experience included. The constraint of one round trip a day aside, it's a strong option for travelers who want to turn travel from something to "get through" into a destination in its own right.

Sources

VietnamPlus: Hue–Phong Nha tourist train to begin service in September

Nhan Dan: New Hue–Tho Loc heritage train service links Central Viet Nam’s World Heritage sites

Vietnam Times: Explore Central Vietnam Aboard the Hue–Phong Nha Heritage Train

UNESCO World Heritage Centre: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

A heritage train connecting Hue and Phong Nha in about four and a half hours launched in September 2026.
