They went live on July 20, 2026. Check-in that once meant queuing at a staffed counter can now be completed by passengers themselves. For business travelers shuttling frequently between Hanoi and Japan, and for residents who use international flights on every trip home, it's an undramatic but keenly felt change.

The kiosks at islands A and B and the self bag-drop machines at counters A01 and A02 went into operation

What was introduced are self-check-in kiosks placed on Islands A and B of Terminal 2, and automated bag-drop machines set up at counters A01 and A02. They're for international flights, usable by passengers who hold valid travel documents and need no special assistance. You issue your boarding pass at the kiosk, then finish tagging and dropping your suitcase at the automated machine. Vietnam Airlines senior vice president Dang Anh Tuan explains that passengers can "handle boarding procedures more independently and cut waiting time during busy periods." The aim is to divert peak-hour lines to the machines.

Check-in closes 60 minutes before; baggage drop closes 50 minutes before

The first thing users should grasp is the cutoff. Check-in kiosks open six hours before departure and close 60 minutes prior. Self bag-drop runs from three hours to 50 minutes before departure. Since the cutoffs are as early as the staffed counters, 'there's a machine so I'm fine at the last minute' doesn't hold.

Procedure

Check-in opens

Deadline

Self-check-in kiosks

Six hours before departure

60 minutes before departure

Automated bag drop

Three hours before departure

50 minutes before departure

Baggage drop opens later and closes earlier. If you're checking bags, count back from this 50-minutes-before wall to set your airport arrival time, and you'll be safe.

Noi Bai's rollout follows Tan Son Nhat T3, Da Nang and Fukuoka

This rollout didn't come out of nowhere. Vietnam Airlines already runs similar kiosks on domestic flights at Tan Son Nhat's Terminal 3, Da Nang and Hue (Phu Bai), and abroad has supported automated processing at Singapore's Changi, Frankfurt, Fukuoka and Nagoya (Chubu). Travelers flying from Japan to Vietnam may have encountered the kiosks first at Fukuoka or Chubu. With this Noi Bai Terminal 2 support, the same process is now available on the return leg from Hanoi, aligning the experience in both directions. The carrier says it is considering expansion to further airports at home and abroad.

Business travelers with little luggage can skip the counter; excess baggage goes to a staffed desk

It pays off for business travelers with little luggage and residents who know the flow by heart. Finish online check-in and move with carry-on only, and you can head straight to security without stopping at a counter. Even with bags to check, the boarding-pass line and the bag-drop line are merged into one, lowering the odds of being held up in front of a counter during busy hours.

On the other hand, travelers using Vietnam Airlines international flights for the first time, those with excess or special baggage, and those needing assistance will use a staffed counter as before. Understand it as a design that routes the experienced crowd to machines to speed up staffed-counter turnover, and you won't misjudge on the day. Note that Noi Bai has international departures concentrated at certain hours, and lines can lengthen at security and immigration. Even if check-in itself gets faster, the structure of losing time at the screening beyond it doesn't change. It's realistic to move as if the time freed up by the self-service kiosk should go to giving yourself a cushion at screening.

On your next trip to Vietnam, stop by the kiosks at islands A and B and count back from 50 minutes prior

For now, two points matter: it covers international flights at Terminal 2, and the cutoff is 60 minutes before departure (50 minutes for bag drop). Whether Japanese-language display is available and how crowded it is vary by season, so on your first time, arrive a little early and check the kiosk locations (islands A and B, counters A01 and A02) to operate them calmly. If your trip fits into carry-on, the kiosk lets you skip the counter queue entirely; if you're checking bags, set your arrival time from the 50-minutes-before mark and move early, allowing for crowds at security and immigration.

For flights to and from Hanoi and ground-access matters, it's worth checking the related articles too.
