Give a perfect 5 and comments flood in—"which shop?" "did it have pate?"—and address exchanges begin. Whether there's pate, the amount of chili, the makeup of the cold cuts, the price, regional differences—the points of discussion get endlessly detailed. The group's profile image uses H’Hen Nie, the 2018 Miss Universe representative, wearing a traditional costume modeled on banh mi.

Not just within Vietnam—the offerings in migration destinations are also on the table

Posts aren't limited to within Vietnam. Shops in countries with immigrant communities, such as Australia and the United States, also become comparison targets, and "how close to the flavor back home" is debated. For Vietnamese living abroad, it's a clue for finding hometown banh mi, and for local shops it's a place where their reputation spreads. In April 2026, roast pork banh mi (banh mi heo quay) was selected for Taste Atlas's top 100 Southeast Asian dishes, and it became a talking point within the group too.

Worth a look for Vietnam lovers in Japan before a trip

This community becomes a living shop list for those planning a Vietnam trip. That's because alley stalls not listed in guidebooks appear with scores from people who actually ate there. There are many English posts too, so run a translation and you'll know "the shops being rated at this very moment." If you're going to choose just one shop in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, tracing the shops with perfect-score posts is a viable move.

Why a single sandwich crosses borders

A dish of Vietnamese fillings stuffed into a baguette became a world breakfast through immigrants and social media. The sight of 200,000 people rating each other's scores shows that banh mi is no longer Vietnam's alone. At the same time, the most intense debates are, after all, exchanged over the flavor back home.

Related reading:
・"Stand by Me" with a banh mi in hand: #StandBanhMi spreads worldwide on TikTok
・Vietnamese noodles rank second in the world: pho tops TasteAtlas 2026, with 18 dishes in the top 10

Source:Tuoi Tre

The Facebook group cluster dedicated solely to discussing banh mi, "Vietnamese Banh Mi Appreciation Society," has topped 200,000 members.
